So Why Chauncey?
Not only was Chauncey a great player in the NBA, but also a great person on and off the court. Just ask his teammates or members of the communities he has worked to help and it becomes easy to see what a great force he was and continues to be.
Best known as “Mr. Big Shot” for being one of the top point guards in the NBA, Chauncey Billups was known for late game heroics, buzzer beating 3-pointers and leadership capabilities. Billups was selected as the 3rd overall draft pick in the 1997 NBA draft. He played for 17 seasons on 8 different teams including the Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers. A 90% career free throw shooter with an average of 15 points per game, Billups was an asset to almost every team he played on. His value however, went far beyond scoring. His teammates always regarded him as a leader, and there is still talk of him becoming a coach on one of his former teams.
Billups’ #1 Jersey was retired by the Pistons in 2016, and he has been a regular NBA TV commentator on ABC & ESPN broadcasts.
Chauncey isn’t just known for his contributions on the court, but also his leadership and goodwill off the court as well. In 2006, Billups joined forces with Lonnie Porter, Regis University Men’s Head Basketball Coach, to form the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy. The academy provides academic and leadership training to at-risk inner city students from Denver. Regis University is committed to offering graduates of this program the opportunity to attend college through scholarships. Billups is extending his reach to New York as he has committed to providethe center financial support to open the Chauncey Billups Leadership Academy in Yonkers. The academy will target at-risk youth and young adults with the goal of transforming their lives, reducing crime and improving the neighborhood.
The combination of leadership, talent and generosity has made Chauncey a special focus of ours to collect. We hope you enjoy the collection!
